It is said that whenever Mobutu heard of an African leader who had lost his seat at the polls, he would throw his head back in laughter and retort with the now (in)famous “How can you lose an election?”. As the DRC celebrates 50 years of independence today and Mobutu’s words still sound like prophecy. The leaders in power today have surely taken Mobutu’s words to heart. They know how not to lose an election. Which is a sad reflection on a country whose economy was once, second only to S.A. But then again T.I.A. Viva DRC, Viva Zaire, and rumble on.
